Press release – January 27th, 2017

A stopover in Japan is a key step for the Tara Pacific expedition (2016 – 2018), dedicated to studying coral throughout Asia and the Pacific Ocean. The French research schooner Tara left her home port of Lorient (in Brittany, France) on May 28, 2016 and will arrive in Fukuoka on February 18th for her first visit to Japan.

8 other stopovers will follow: Onomichi, Kobe, Nagoya, Yokohama and Tokyo. Tara has already traveled about 30,000 kilometers of the 100,000 kilometers planned for this 11th expedition — an unprecedented study of coral reefs. During the past 7 months sailing the world’s largest ocean, the schooner made observations and carried out sampling on a large number of these reefs. The first results show that reefs have been considerably damaged by global warming.

Aboard Tara, more than 15 nationalities are represented. The crew, composed mainly of sailors and scientists, includes researchers from several international laboratories, in particular from the Japanese universities of Tsukuba, Kochi and Kyoto.

Tara Pacific: a first

Criss-crossing the Pacific Ocean from east to west and from north to south, teams of Tara coral biologists, oceanographers and plankton specialists have collected a multitude of samples – corals, reef fish, algae, and sea water. Our main objective is to establish the first global inventory of coral reefs, to better understand their biodiversity and their capacity to adapt to current upheavals. This unique expedition covers a very wide geographical area, with an approach never before carried out on this scale. Since 2003, Tara has conducted 11 expeditions, including Tara Arctic – where the schooner drifted for 507 days (2006-2008) among the ice floes. And Tara Oceans – devoted to the study of plankton, the results of which appeared in 5 articles published in the journal SCIENCE (May 2015).

Coral, essential to life in the ocean

Coral reefs cover only 0.2% of the ocean’s surface, but are essential to marine life, sheltering nearly one third of marine species. Threatened by climate and environmental change, the health of coral reefs is crucial for mankind, and especially for populations that depend on marine resources. A large number of reefs have been disappearing in recent years. Recently a survey by the Japanese government showed that 70.1% of Japan’s largest coral reef in the Sekiseishoko region of the Okinawa island chain died because of excessively high water temperatures.

Takeshi Kitano, tara’s ambassador in Japan

We are very pleased and honored that Takeshi Kitano has accepted to the title of Tara’s Ambassador in Japan“, says Romain Troublé, managing director of the Tara Expeditions Foundation. For several years Takeshi Kitano has been following the activities of Tara, “this beautiful sailboat capable of drifting with the ice cap in the North Pole“. He is a long-time friend of French fashion designer agnès b., co-founder with Etienne Bourgois of Tara Expeditions and primary sponsor of the Tara Expeditions Foundation. Takeshi Kitano has repeatedly expressed his deep concern about current climatic upheavals and major ecological imbalances: “I see, like everyone else today, that our planet is in very bad shape“.

Stopovers open to the public

During the ports of call at Fukuoka, Onomichi, Kobe, Nagoya, Yokohama, Tokyo, Shimoda, Kochi and Okinawa, the schooner will be open to the public for tours, accompanied by exhibitions and conferences.Visits of schoolchildren are also planned to help raise awareness among young people.
