Help scientists to identify plankton

Want to do some participatory science ? Go to the website planktonportal.org to help scientists treat the huge amount of data they have on plankton.

(Some researchers involved in this project took part in the Tara Oceans expedition (2009-2013) aimed at collecting and studying plankton in all the oceans of the world.)

Sign up online to participate. After reading a brief description of the different species, their shapes, their roles, you can contribute to the identification of the plankton images collected by ISIS – a kind of virtual net that captures images of organisms which the site offers for study. You need to measure the width and length of the body using your mouse, and assign it a category depending on its shape.

The goal of this project is to define more precisely the locations and times when certain types of plankton are present in different oceans. This digital experiment will ultimately contribute to a better understanding of life in the oceans and their state of health, by  advancing more rapidly the scientific research on a subject at the center of environmental concerns today.

This site can also be used in the classroom. It is available in 5 languages including French:
