Tara Expeditions is a non-profit program directed by Etienne Bourgois, chief executive officer of Agnès b, a French fashion brand. It was initiated in 2003, thanks to the brand’s founder, Agnès B., and her determination to commit herself to the planet’s remediation. Tara Oceans is its current expedition.
The starting point for Tara Expeditions was the acquisition of the unique expedition sailing schooner Tara, previously owned by Dr Jean-Louis Etienne and Sir Peter Blake. Tara’s voyages are dedicated to scientific research on the impact of global warming on the oceans, with two basic objectives:
- to serve as a platform for scientific research by exploring previously unreachable ocean locations, and
- to raise public awareness of scientific & environmental ocean characteristics, through ongoing reports on its adventurous voyages.
Tara is well established in the history of ocean going exploration through the 7 expeditions it has carried out in the Arctic, and Antarctic, as well as in the seas around Patagonia, Greenland and South Georgia.
During its last expedition, Tara Arctic, the ship made a fabulous voyage to the heart of the climate machine, by experiencing a 507-day drift, frozen into the ice of the Arctic Ocean. This expedition, monitored by the EU scientific program Damocles, provided a dynamic platform for observations of global warming. The results of Tara Arctic have been brought to the attention of national and international institutions addressing climate change and will be presented at the forthcoming Copenhagen Conference on Global Warming.
Tara Oceans 2009-2012
Tara Oceans is an exceptional 3-year marine expedition managed by Tara Expeditions’ team and a scientific consortium, including major international laboratories, led by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Like the previous expeditions, it will sail under the auspices of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP). This program will allow researchers to study previously unknown and crucial marine ecosystems. Eric Karsenty Research Director for EMBL and CNRS is leading Tara oceans as Co-director of the voyage.
The urgency of understanding and coping with global warming makes this an extraordinarily important voyage to add to earlier understandings of the origins of ocean life so as to better preserve the diversity of its future.
