Tara Oceans Mission Djibouti

"The success of our mission would not have been possible without the support of Tara’s fantastic crew.

Throughout the expedition, they shared our interest and enthusiasm in achieving the scientific goals we had set, while also demonstrating the patience and insight necessary for such demanding work. First and foremost, we would like to thank Captain Olivier Marien, who (assisted by First Mate Daniel Cron) oversaw all aspects of our activities, and ensured the ship was safe and that the necessary daily tasks of operating a ship at sea did not interfere with the scientific goals. Captain Marien was also an excellent representative of the Tara in dealing with local authorities and demonstrated remarkable diplomatic skills.

As marine biologists, we are particularly indebted to the two Dive Officers, Mathieu Oriot and Samuel Audrain. They not only ensured safe diving operations, but also helped with all aspects of diving logistics and small boat operations, while also assisting the underwater cameraman who was also onboard for the mission. Chief Engineer Guillaume Bracq, in addition to his services in the Tara’s engine room, also helped with the daily logistics of launching and recovering small boats, and the safe handling of heavy dive equipment and supplies. Finally, as they say, an army marches on its stomach: we could not have managed the mission’s rigorous work schedule without the culinary talents of Chief Cook Julien Girardot, who not only prepared delicious and nutritious meals every day, but also helped, as an impressive photographer, to record and document Tara’s adventures."

Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations speaks to Tara at Rio +20

06/21/2012

Part of the speach :

"Earlier this year, I had the chance to board the Tara Expeditions when it docked in New York.
The crew was really inspiring. They shared so much information with me about oceans and climate change. I am really grateful that they are raising awareness around the world … and I am very proud that the United Nations is supporting them.
As I stood on the Tara that day in February, I stood on the deck and looked out at downtown Manhattan. We were surrounded by skyscrapers but we had a window on the deep blue sea. It was a reminder that our worlds are connected.
I promised the crew that I would continue working with dedication for the planet’s oceans.
Now, Rio has to put more wind in our sails, so we can navigate the waves to a better future.
Let us advance for our oceans and our world."
