This afternoon, after four months with no other sign of life on the ice, Bruno entered the saloon excitedly with news of a polar bear sighting. Climbing onto a pressure ridge beside Tara a large bear passed within a few meters of the boat, departing rapidly once we were all on deck with cameras and spotlights. Unfortunately we were not fast enough to take a photo. This sighting, the first since last October, has reminded us again to maintain a vigilant lookout when working outside, always taking a rocket flare and gun just in case. After spending almost six months in the High Arctic we are starting to feel at home up here. However, when seeing the lord of the ice wandering freely into the darkness one realises that it is really his territory.
