Tara welcomes the decision of the French government, announced on June 25 by the Minister of Ecology, Ségolène Royal, to ban the free distribution of single-use plastic bags, starting January 1, 2016.  Very thin plastic bags – distributed for free by merchants – are difficult to re-use. A well-known source of pollution, they have a growing impact on marine ecosystems. We also encourage the introduction of tax incentives for businesses developing 100% compostable bio-plastics.

“We’ve been talking about eliminating plastic bags for much too long. The sea is polluted, fish are choking and I think the time has come to change the situation by adopting this law.” Ségolène Royal

The schooner Tara – currently in the Mediterranean for a 7-month expedition to study the impact of plastics on the sea – has been looking into the problem of plastic pollution for 3 years, collaborating with organizations that have been campaigning for years in favor of the ban, especially Surfrider Foundation Europe.
