Jean-Claude Gascard is Research Director at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique CNRS since 1992 and Docteur d’Etat at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) since 1977 (specialized in« Océanographie Physique Dynamique »). He started working as a polar oceanographer in 1976 int the Labrador sea, in cooperation with the Oceanographic Institut of Bedford (Dartmouth -Canada) and contributed to the international experience Zone de glace marginale (MIZEX) in 1983-1984. He was president of the Arctic Ocean Sciences Board (AOSB) and a membre of the Director Committee in charge of the preparation of the International Conference for the research program of Arctic in 2005 IASC II. His main fields of research are the interactions between polar and subtropical water mass leading the formation of deep and abyssal waters, thermohaline circulation, interaction between air, sea and ice, and the implication of the Arctic Ocean in climate variability and global changes.
