A new public establishment supervised by the ministers responsible for environment and agriculture, the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) was created to protect and restore biodiversity. It integrates the missions, the intervention areas and the 2,800 agents of the French Agency for Biodiversity (AFB) and the National Office of Hunting and Wildlife (ONCFS).
For terrestrial, aquatic and marine environments, the OFB contributes to monitoring, preservation, management and restoration of biodiversity. It also ensures balanced and sustainable water management in coordination with the national policy of controlling global warming (law n ° 2019-773 of 24 July).
The OFB is an institutional partner of the 2019 Microplastics Mission by supporting the development of educational and communication materials used with the general public during stopovers.
The OFB also supported the publication in March 2020 of Tara’s Blue Book: the sources of plastic pollution which reinforces the scientific (in French only for the moment) work coordinated by the CNRS, and the educational outreach and advocacy actions carried out during the Microplastics Mission, from May to November 2019. This was a 17,000 km mission (with 18 stopovers) that studied 9 of the largest European rivers and collected nearly 2,700 samples.
