UNESCO and the Tara Ocean Foundation join Forces to improve our knowledge of the Ocean. On 27 June 2013, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, and the President of Tara Ocean Foundation, Etienne Bourgois, signed an agreement stipulating that the two organizations will carry out common projects to contribute to scientific research, international cooperation, sharing data and raising public awareness.
“We need to recognize the centrality of the ocean to foster sustainable development and this is vital to build a more effective and credible post-2015 agenda,” said the Director General.
“We need also to realize that global challenges cannot be met by States alone — this is why these partnerships with civil society and private partners like Tara Ocean Foundation are so important,” she continued.
“Every person involved in our expeditions, brings their skills and expertise, and is committed to a better world. Addressing environmental issues is important to prevent humanitarian risks and conflicts tomorrow,” said the President. “I want Tara to make its mark, by encouraging young people to mobilize and take control of their destiny.”
“I feel that this preoccupation is far from that of the generation of 15-30 year olds. I would like Tara to make her mark, by encouraging them to mobilize and take control of their destiny.”
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Agnès B, fashion designer, Patron of Tara Ocean Foundation and Romain Troublé, Executive Director of the Tara Ocean Foundation.
